Player Ratings: Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa – Giroud Sends Arsenal 2nd
Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick as Arsenal thrashed relegated Aston Villa 4-0 on the final day of the 2015-16 season to finish above Tottenham Hotspur in second position.
The Gunners started the day two points behind their North London rivals who were at relegated Newcastle. Incredibly, Mauricio Pochettino’s side bottled the game, losing 5-1 with the Magpies reduced to 10 men before scoring their final three goals.
Arsenal’s victory over Aston Villa means they finish as runners-up, some 10 points below Leicester City but ahead of their local rivals for a 21st consecutive season.
Here are our player ratings from Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa:
Cech 6 | The Arsenal goalkeeper was only called upon to make a couple of routine saves in securing his 16th clean sheet of the season which saw him win the Premier League Golden Glove award.
Bellerin 8 | Another solid display down the right-hand side from the young Spaniard who picked up his fifth assist of the season with a superb ball for Olivier Giroud.
Gabriel 5 | A couple of nervy moments from the Brazilian who was caught out several times by Aston Villa’s Andre Ayew. Surely Arsene Wenger will replace Gabriel Paulista over the summer after a poor season.
Koscielny 8 | The French centre-back was solid in making up for his partner’s mistakes and never looked like being beat.
Monreal 7 | Made a key interception to keep the score 1-0 at the time and at the other end the left-back provided the assist for Olivier Giroud’s opener with a delightful cross.
Coquelin 5 | The holding midfielder was off the pace today which could be excused by his lack of game time in recent weeks.
Wilshere 6 | Started out on the right wing but often drifted inside to get involved in some good moments for the Gunners. Jack Wilshere did miss a great chance to score.
Cazorla 7 | Along with the likes of Wilshere, Santi Cazorla helped the hosts control possession in the middle of the park and set up attacks.
Ozil 8 | The German playmaker created a number of chances and took his assist tally to 19 on the season with another in this game. Mesut Ozil narrowly missed out on setting a new Premier League record as a result.
Sanchez 8 | A lively performance from the Chilean who showed some sublime touches but did have a few frustrating moments. Came close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
Giroud 10 | The French striker finished off a frustrating campaign with a superb hat-trick. Olivier Giroud showed that he can be a real handful when he’s on form.
Elneny 6 | Was brought on to sure things up in front of the defence.
Arteta N/A | A late entrance to saw farewell. Looked to have scored the fourth goal but it has gone down as an own goal.
Campbell N/A | Introduced too late to make any impact.
