Barcelona have one hand on the La Liga trophy following their 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou on Saturday night that saw them move 11 points clear at the top with only seven games remaining.

Ernesto Valverde’s side left it late by scoring their two goals in the final six minutes against an Atleti side that had been reduced to 10 men inside the opening half hour.

Diego Costa was shown red for the visitors on 28 minutes for abusing referee Jesus Gil Manzano. The Catalans preceded to see 64% of the possession against Diego Simeone’s side, winning the shot count 21 to nine, with 10 of those on target compared to the visitors’ two.

Luis Suarez broke the deadlock against a resilient Atletico Madrid side on 85 minutes with a curling effort from 25 yards that flicked in off the base of Jan Oblak’s post.

Just 60 seconds later, Lionel Messi was played through down the right wing, before cutting inside two defenders and beating the Slovenian goalkeeper with a low shot for his 33rd league goal of the season. In the process, the Argentine has now won a record 335 La Liga games, surpassing former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
