Portuguese Primeira Liga leaders Benfica won the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie against last season’s German Cup runners-up Eintracht Frankfurt, 4-2 at the Stadium of Light on Thursday.

Joao Felix opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half in what was the 19-year-old forward’s first goal in his fourth start in this season’s competition.

Frankfurt levelled through Luka Jovic on 40 minutes but fell behind to Felix once again only three minutes later with a powerful 20-yard strike into the bottom corner of Kevin Trapp’s goal.

The visiting team had a goal ruled out for offside at the end of the first half before Ruben Dias headed in five minutes after the break to give Benfica a 3-1 advantage. The Portuguese side were well on top when Joao Felix completed his hat-trick four minutes later.

Former FC Porto forward Goncalo Paciencia scored a second away goal for Eintracht Frankfurt in the final 20 minutes but the German side have it all to do in the return leg in a week’s time.
