Highlights: Barcelona 1-2 Valencia

By on 25th May 2019

Valencia pulled off a surprise at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on Sunday as they upstaged Barcelona to win the Copa del Rey.

Ernesto Valverde had said prior to the game that doing the domestic double would have eased some of the pain caused by their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Liverpool, but were far from their best against Valencia.

Kevin Gameiro fired Valencia ahead with a powerful strike midway through the first half before Rodrigo doubled their lead 12 minutes later. The Spanish international headed home from close range following an excellent cross by Carlos Soler from the right.

Lionel Messi pulled one back in the 73rd minute as he tapped home from close range after Gerard Pique had hit the post from a corner. The Argentine had earlier in the second half seen a free kick deflected over the bar and another effort clip the outside of the post.

Barcelona had been crowned 2018-19 La Liga champions several weeks ago but will be disappointed how their season ended in May with two cup exits.
