Highlights: Portugal 3-1 Switzerland

By on 5th June 2019

Portugal have reached the final of the inaugural UEFA Nations League following a 3-1 win over Switzerland at FC Porto’s Estadio do Dragao on Wednesday.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo helped himself to a hat-trick as the reigning European Championship holders are one win away from their second international honour in the past three years.

The Juventus forward gave Fernando Santos’ side in the 25th minute with a stunning free kick that flew into the bottom-right corner. Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer didn’t even move.

Switzerland did equalise just before the hour mark when VAR helped referee Felix Brych overturn a penalty to Portugal and give it to the opposition. Replays showed Nelson Semedo’s foul on Steven Zuber prior to Portugal going up the other end. Full-back Ricardo Rodriguez duly converted.

With the game heading towards extra-time Ronaldo stepped up in the closing minutes. First, he swept home Bernardo Silva’s cross in the 88th minute and then sealed the game 102 seconds later by firing the ball into the spot of the goal.

Portugal will face the winners of the Netherlands versus England in Sunday’s final.
