Highlights: Netherlands 3-1 England

By on 6th June 2019

The Netherlands beat a woeful England 3-1 after extra-time at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimaraes on Thursday to book their place in the inaugural UEFA Nations League final where they will face hosts Portugal on Sunday.

In a game where possession was fairly even, Ronald Koeman’s side looked by far the more potent in the final third, producing 14 shots on target to England’s three over the 120 minutes.

Marcus Rashford had won and converted a penalty in the 32nd minute following two mistakes from Matthijs de Ligt. That was a lead Gareth Southgate’s side held until the 73rd minute when the Ajax captain himself made amends for his mistake by powering home a headed equaliser. Prior to this, the Netherlands had spurned several good opportunities.

The Three Lions thought they’d taken a late lead through Jesse Lingard but VAR intervened to show the Manchester United midfielder was a fraction offside.

John Stones gifted Netherlands the lead seven minutes into extra-time, though substitute Quincy Promes’ effort was actually going wide before it deflected in off a sliding Kyle Walker. Seven minutes later and Promes scored a goal of his own after Ross Barkley gifted possession to the opposition inside his own penalty area.

England have now just won one of their last six games at tournament finals (D2, L3).
