Highlights: England 0-0 Switzerland (6-5 pens)

By on 9th June 2019

England scraped to a penalty shootout victory over Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff after missing numerous opportunities over 120 minutes.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford was England’s spot-kick hero again as the Three Lions beat Switzerland.

The goalkeeper denied Switzerland’s Josip Drmic after the first 11 penalties had all been scored in the shootout. Pickford himself had fired home England’s fifth.

England had been beaten 3-1 in extra time by the Netherlands only three days earlier and struck the woodwork twice through Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling. Sterling missed a number of chances to score during the game, whilst Switzerland goalkeeper made excellent saves to deny Dele Alli. Callum Wilson also had a goal overturned after VAR intervened.

Harry Maguire, Ross Barkley, Jadon Sancho, Sterling, Pickford and Eric Dier all scored in the penalty shootout for England.

As the result was a draw over 120 minutes, England have now won just one of their last seven games at tournament finals (D3, L3).
