Highlights: England U21s 2-4 Romania U21s

By on 21st June 2019

The England under-21 side have been knocked out of the European Under-21 Championships after only two group games following their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Romania at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi in Cesena on Friday.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side lost 2-1 to France on Tuesday, leaving the Young Lions six points behind both the sides they have played with one game remaining and only one nation guaranteed to reach the semi-finals.

All six goals came in a crazy 18-minute spell at the end of the game. The first came for Romania from the penalty spot through George Puscas, conceded by Jonjoe Kenny. Four minutes later England levelled up through a long-range effort from Demarai Gray only for Romania to re-take the lead six minutes later through Ianis Hagi after some horrible defending from Fikayo Tomori. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson could have done better himself.

Two minutes later Tammy Abraham chested the ball down and finished with his first touch to level. But Romania went ahead for the third and decisive time in the 88th minute when Florinel Coman’s 25-yard effort manager to squirm through the hands of the England goalkeeper at his near post. Coman scored his second goal in the third minute of stoppage time with another 25-yard strike, this time in the top corner.

The result means that France and Romania would both be guaranteed a semi-final spot if they draw Monday’s game in Cesana.
