Highlights: England U21s 3-3 Croatia U21s

England exit the European Under-21 Championship without a single victory despite heading into the tournament as the bookmakers’ favourites, following a 3-3 draw against Croatia at the San Marino Stadium on Monday.

Both sides had already been eliminated before their final game in San Marino.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side took the lead three times but were pegged back on each occasion. Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson opened the scoring by converting a penalty that he had won in the 11th minute. Tammy Abraham and Demarai Gray both missed great opportunities to double the Young Lions’ lead before Josip Brekalo powered past Jonjoe Kenny before equalising five minutes before half-time.

A poor defensive header from Filip Uremovic setup James Maddison to restore England’s lead only three minutes into the second half. Everton’s Nikola Vlasic equalised for Croatia just after the hour mark.

Jonjoe Kenny scored the goal of the game with a 25-yard strike across goal to give England their third lead, 20 minutes from time. However, Brekalo found space down Kenny’s side eight minutes from time to get into the penalty area and equalise once again.

England finish the tournament with one point from their three games, scoring six goals and conceding nine. They conceded just four in their 10 qualifiers.
