Highlights: Vitesse 2-2 Ajax

By on 4th August 2019

Defending Dutch champions Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw at Vitesse in the opening game of the 2019-20 Eredivisie season.

The hosts went ahead through Matus Bero on 13 minutes. The Slovakian international’s low effort took a wicked deflection off Perr Schuurs to deceive Andre Onana on its way into the net.

Ajax got going midway through the first half. Donny van de Beek saw two efforts saved either side of Daley Blind hitting the crossbar from 25 yards out. Van de Beek, who was linked to several clubs over the summer, was third time lucky when he finished well from a scuffed cross from Hakim Ziyech.

Vitesse retook the lead 10 minutes into the second half when former Ajax youngster Riechedly Bazoer poked the ball into the far corner from just inside the penalty area. Two minutes later and the Dutch giants should have been level again, but Ziyech saw his lazy effort from six yards saved and Razvan Marin skied the rebound for a similar distance.

Erik ten Hag’s side levelled up for the second time with 15 minutes remaining when Dusan Tadic collected van de Beek’s pass inside the area and smashed the ball past Remko Pasveer in the Vitesse goal.

There was still time for Bazoer to receive his marching orders. However, Ajax couldn’t find a winner with the extra man for the final five minutes.
