Valencia overcame a missed penalty and a goal overturned by VAR to beat Barcelona 2-0 at the Mestalla on Saturday.

Gerard Pique was fortunate not to be sent off in the foul conceding the first half spot kick but Maxi Gomez saw his effort comfortably saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the Barcelona goal.

The German goalkeeper was the visitors’ best player in the first half, pulling off five saves in total, but didn’t have a chance with Gomez’s first effort of the second half, which took a wicked deflection off Jordi Alba to give Valencia a 48th minute lead.

Barcelona offered very little threat all game. Lionel Messi headed a good opportunity wide and saw a free kick saved by Juame Domenech.

A quick throw-in from Valencia in the final 15 minutes caught Barcelona napping as the ball was worked to Maxi Gomez on the edge of the penalty area. The Uruguayan had time and space before curling into the bottom corner, leaving ter Stegen flat-footed.

Defeat leaves Barcelona level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table, with their rivals going to Real Valladolid on Sunday night.
