Highlights: Chelsea 2-1 Spurs

Chelsea took a huge march towards next season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 win at home to rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The victory moves Frank Lampard’s side four points ahead of Spurs, who are down in fifth place.

Tottenham were only in Champions League action on Wednesday night, losing a hard fought second round first leg tie 1-0 at home to RB Leizpig.

Fatigue appeared to be showing for the North London side as they were second best throughout the game at Stamford Bridge.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring on 15 minutes with an excellent effort, beating Hugo Lloris at his near post after Ross Barkley’s effort had come back off the outside of the post.

Marcos Alonso doubled the Blues’ lead only three minutes into the second half with a fine 20-yard strike across Lloris’ goal into the far corner.

Tottenham were lucky to finish the game with 11 men after Giovani Lo Celso’s stamp on Cesar Azpilicueta went unpunished by both referee Michael Oliver and VAR, just two minutes after they had fallen 0-2 behind.

Erik Lamela scored a consolation with 90 seconds remaining but Jose Mourinho’s side were always second best.
