Highlights: Leeds 1-1 Aston Villa

By on 29th April 2019

Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League was made official on Sunday as Leeds United were held 1-1 at home by Aston Villa, meaning the Blades are five points clear of the Whites down in third place.

The match itself at Elland Road was surrounded by controversy after Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa allowed Aston Villa to score an uncontested goal after the hosts had taken the lead whilst Jonathan Kodjia was on the floor following a challenge from Liam Cooper.

There were lots of temper losses from players on and off the field in a passionate encounter between two of the pre-season favourites for promotion, both of whom are confirmed to be in this season’s play-offs and many of whom expect to meet again in Wembley’s final next month.

Leeds took the lead on 72 minutes through Mateusz Klich, which started the controversy as Aston Villa’s Kodjia went down inside his own half. The hosts never showed intention to kick the ball out of play and continued, leading to the opening goal.

A brawl ensued and Anwar El Ghazi was shown a straight red card an alleged elbow on Patrick Bamford. Replays show the Leeds player dived and therefore one would expect the Dutch player to have his suspension overturned by the FA in the coming days.

What happened next was quite astonishing. Leeds manager Bielsa ordered his players to allow Aston Villa to equalise from kickoff, allowing Albert Adomah to run through unchallenged and tap the ball into an an unguarded net.

The game finished 1-1, meaning Leeds are guaranteed to finish 3rd or 4th this season, and Aston Villa have virtually secured fifth spot due to their far superior goal difference ahead of Derby County.
