Highlights: Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

By on 18th January 2020

Issac Hayden scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Newcastle United hit Chelsea with a sucker punch at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The visitors from West London dominated possession and the shout count without overly testing Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.

Newcastle striker Joelinton came closest in the first half with a header from seven yards out. The Brazilian club record transfer now only has one goal in 23 Premier League appearances since moving from 1899 Hoffenheim over the summer.

N’Golo Kante had the best chance for the Blues in the first half but his effort from a tight angle was blocked by Dubravka at his near post.

Deep in stoppage time, Chelsea only partially cleared a corner, allowing Allan Saint-Maximin to cross from deep, picking out Isaac Hayden at the far post to head home from close range.

Three points have moved Steve Bruce’s side seven points clear of the dropzone, whilst Chelsea have a five point lead over the chasing pack for the Champions League places, prior to Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday.
