Highlights: West Ham 0-2 Newcastle

Newcastle United kicked off the 2020-21 Premier League season with a 2-0 win away to West Ham United on Saturday night.

Steve Bruce’s side started the game the better without creating a clear-cut chance in the first half.

In fact, it was the Hammers who came the closest to opening the scoring in the opening 45 minutes with Angelo Ogbonna’s flicked header hitting the top of the crossbar.

Before the break, Pablo Fornals would scuff an effort from the penalty spot onto the top of the bar too.

Jonjo Shelvey had fired into the side netting and Andy Carroll saw an effort deflected over for the visitors.

The breakthrough came 10 minutes after the restart when Javi Manquillo’s deflected cross was flicked on by Jeff Hendrick and poked home by fellow debutant Callum Wilson from close range. The England international’s instinct saw him beat Lukasz Fabianski to the ball.

Hendrick added to his assist on his debut by scoring the goal to kill the game off three minutes from time. Some good play from Miguel Almiron saw the Paraguayan setup the goal with Hendrick producing a fine right-footed strike into the roof of the net.
